Lay out both uprights as a matched pair so the mortises align. Cut the through-mortises first, then fit each tenon with a slight taper and saw a centered kerf for the wedge. The wedge grain should run perpendicular to the kerf so it does not split. Dry-fit the entire assembly and confirm the shelf remains square before glue is introduced. Drive wedges only until the shoulders close; excessive force can crack the upright. Pare them flush after curing, soften the edges, and use a finish that highlights rather than obscures the exposed joinery.
