For a small workspace, target a top around 1100 × 550 mm and a finished height near 740 mm. Use tapered legs joined to the aprons with mortise-and-tenons; avoid relying on screws into end grain. The shallow drawer can run on waxed wooden runners, with a stopped groove at the rear for cable access. Attach the solid top with figure-eight fasteners or elongated screw slots so it can expand across its width. Sand ash carefully to 180 or 220 grit, raise the grain once with water, and use a low-sheen finish to preserve its pale color.
