Keep a floating nightstand shallow—roughly 400 mm wide and 280–320 mm deep—so it does not crowd the bed. Build the carcase from stable quarter-sawn oak and use a plywood back captured in grooves to resist racking. A French cleat fixed into studs carries the weight more safely than wall plugs alone. Fit the drawer only after the case is square, leaving a consistent reveal. Round the front corners before final sanding, and finish all faces, including hidden ones, to reduce uneven seasonal movement.
