Build the top from dry, flat oak boards with alternating growth-ring orientation. Glue the field panel first, then attach breadboard ends with a housed tongue and three pegs; elongate the outer peg holes so seasonal movement can occur. Join the base with mortise-and-tenon joints and leave a small reveal beneath the top. Ease sharp edges, sand through 180 grit and use a hard-wax oil. Wear eye and hearing protection when milling.
