Choose rot-resistant cedar and design the legs with stretchers so the bench cannot rack. Use exterior-rated screws in predrilled holes, keeping end grain off wet ground with adjustable feet. Space lower-shelf slats 8–10 mm apart for drainage. A removable galvanized tray makes soil cleanup easier. Sand hand-contact surfaces to 150 grit and coat only with an exterior oil that can be renewed; always wear a dust mask when sanding cedar.
